About us

The Bay Area Geophysical Society (BAGS) was founded in 1962 to promote the science and practice of geophysics in the Bay Area, California. The BAGS officers hold and continuously build connections with Universities, National Laboratories, US Geological Survey as well as with various private geophysical contractors, consultants, and companies in the Bay Area. We are a community of geoscientists, providing a forum where local geophysicists can get together, present and/or listen to presentations and share experiences, promoting geophysics and a thriving community.

BAGS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Officers, 2023-2024

	Kris MacLennan – PRESIDENT Dr. Kris MacLennan is a Senior Geophysicist at the Energy and Environmental Research Center at UND, working remotely from the Bay Area. He was previously the BAGS Secretary in 2021-2022. An Oakland native, Kris did his undergraduate at UC Berkeley (2006), followed by a PhD in Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines (2013). Kris participated in SAGE in 2005 as an undergrad and returned in 2014 as a TA and credits his experience there with fueling his desire to be an applied geophysicist. Kris worked for GroundMetrics, Inc. in San Diego from 2014 to 2020, split between field surveys and research projects on EM exploration and monitoring. Most recently he organized the EM and Reservoir Surveillance sessions at SEG’s annual meeting. Professional interests include utilizing geophysics, especially non-seismic and electrical/electromagnetic methods, for hydrological, environmental, geothermal, exploration, and carbon sequestration challenges; project and team management; grant and proposal development; and scientific communication.
	Stanislav Glubokovskikh – VICE PRESIDENT Dr. Stanislav Glubokovskikh is a Research Earth Scientist at the Energy Geosciences Division (EGD) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Prior to the Berkeley Lab, he was working as a Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University (Perth, Australia) and a number of research institutions in Russia. Dr. Glubokovskikh’s contribution to the field of seismic reservoir characterization and rock physics has been recognized by several awards from the geophysical professional societies. He also serves as an associate editor for rock physics section at GEOPHYSICS. Right now, Dr. Glubokovskikh focuses on the development of novel algorithms for streamline processing/ interpretation of geophysical and engineering measurements to optimize the subsurface operations, such as: hydraulic fracturing, geothermal reservoir stimulation, injection of carbon dioxide, and well completion. A completely different research topic has to do with the digital rock physics workflows for rock physics diagnostic of the reservoir rocks.
	Gabe Matson – SECRETARY Gabe is currently an Exploration Geoscientist at Fervo Energy, geothermal energy developer. He completed his undergraduate degrees in Earth Sciences and Mathematics from UC Santa Cruz, after which he worked for institutions such as the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and the USGS (in the Geophysical Unit of Menlo Park). Gabe returned to graduate school and completed his MSc in Geophysics at Victoria University of Wellington studying induced seismicity related to geothermal operations. Gabe also has a background in environmental consulting before he made his way back into the geothermal word. At Fervo Energy, he specializes in geothermal exploration, resource assessment, and reservoir characterization projects including geophysical data processing and analysis, well targeting, testing and analysis, developing site conceptual models, and resource capacity estimates. Gabe currently resides in Marin County.
	Graham Brews – TREASURER Graham Brew has nearly 20 years’ experience as a Project and Product Manager for Dynamic Graphics, delivering custom software solutions to global energy companies. Most especially focused on 4D seismic applications for reservoir monitoring and characterization. His background includes work as an Earth Scientist for Chevron in San Ramon, and as an engineering geophysicist at NorCal Geophysical Consultants in Cotati. He also worked in exploration at RTZ Mining and Exploration in Santiago, Chile, and spent several years researching the geologic history of Syria, completing his PhD at Cornell University, New York, in 2001. Graham grew up in the UK and has a B.Sc. in Geophysics from University College, London. He currently lives in Montara, California.
	Randall Mackie – PAST PRESIDENT Randy is a Research Geophysicist at CGG working with the Multi Physics Imaging group based in Milan, Italy since 2011. Specializing in electromagnetic modeling and inversion, he has been involved in the development of numerical modeling and inversion codes including magnetotellurics (MT), controlled source EM (CSEM), gravity, magnetics, and first arrival seismic travel times for decades. In recent years his efforts have concentrated on the development of robust and practical joint inversion algorithms. Prior to CGG, Randy was working with SLB (2007-2011), and Geosystem (1997-2007), a small geophysical contracting company that was based in Milan, Italy. He received his PhD from MIT in 1991, and his undergraduate degree from CSM in 1984. He has been based in San Francisco since 1997.
